I live in Phoenix and have a perfectly good computer monitor I would like to donate to someone who needs it but I would like to get a tax credit for it. I%26#039;d also like to know how much of a tax credit is acceptable.
Where can I donate a computer monitor and get a tax credit for it?
First, most goodwills will not accept PCs or monitors anymore as they have been overloaded with them. Nor will any local dumps take them anymore either without paying an extra fee as there are chemicals in the monitor (I recall something about Mercury being in them, but don%26#039;t quote me on that one).
As for your question...
Dell offers 2 different recycling programs. I BELIEVE that they also give you a free mailing label too. All you need to do is pack it up and ship it. Link Below.
Next, make sure to wipe the hard drive before you send it out with any personal information on it (you never know). There are a few programs out there that will do this for free for you. link below from PC Magazine.
As for a tax write off (as I am a tax preparer for a large tax chain 6 years to date). Couple of things here - (1) The value is what you could get for it at a garage sale (sorry by that%26#039;s all you get); and (2) For all write offs for tax year 2007 you are REQUIRED to have a written receipt (no exceptions anymore - even the $1 you put in the bell ringers kettle outside Walmart this year needs a receipt too).
Good luck and happy new year!

Goodwill

Charity Organizations.
Make sure they give you a receipt for it stating it was a gift.
On that receipt, have a current market value or value as decided by you.
